From the 1650s such sets were used in elite European interiors as an integral part of the decorative scheme; displayed on chimney-pieces, cupboards, tables or over doors, they 'garnished' the interior and so enhanced the status of the owner. The fashion began in Europe using mismatched Chinese porcelain beakers and jars. As imports of Chinese porcelain ceased between 1657 and 1683, European potters at Nevers and Delft copied the originally exotic forms, unifying the sets with matching patterns, or with metal mounts. The fashion continued throughout the 1700s, with almost every ceramic manufactory producing examples, but came to its conclusion during the Arts and Crafts period, when the singular vase became the rage and many sets were broken up and dispersed. This book brings together some of the National Trust's most important sets of garnitures, showing them in their historic context. He examines in detail the early porcelain and stoneware produced by Böttger und Tschirnhaus, the development of a decorative style by the Horold and Löwenfinck. The great Baroque services modelled by Kändler in 1730s are the subject of a special chapter, while another discusses the figure and animal modelling for which he was equally famous. A further chapter is devoted to the snuff boxes and other small objects which the factory produced with such skill and profusion. The factory’s greatest period, from 1710 to 1760, is naturally treated in greatest depth, but the story is continued through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and a special section discusses the early wares decorated by outside enamellers, on Hausmaler. The colour plates mainly illustrate pieces from private collections, many of which have never been reproduced before. A fine book which will appeal not only to every lover of Meissen, but to everyone with an interest in European porcelain. The fact that existing studies of it are either very brief or else out of date has not helped. By persistent observation, comparison and documentary research, Mr. Holgate has finally succeeded in establishing the shapes and decoration of genuine New Hall and the way it developed between 1781 and 1835; and he has reconstructed much of the New Hall pattern book. His comprehensive and discriminating study sets out in detail the whole range of the factory's wares. He has put us doubly in his debt by discussing a number of other factories that produced wares which often been mistaken for New Hall. The author's twenty-page introduction to the catalogue is a serious and thoughtful contribution to the history of this fascinating, and too little known, branch of Italian art. She also provides, for each of the seventy exhibits, a detailed individual description and commentary with provenances and bibliographical notes, often accompanied by one or more black and white illustrations as well as the full colour plate. The main entries are followed by a checklist of the remaining fifty works on the collection, each with a condensed descriptive note and a small black and white print for identification, and the critical apparatus is completed by a full bibliography at the end of the book. The result is a volume which will not only act as a catalogue to this outstandingly attractive and unusual exhibition, but should also hold its place as a reference work for scholars and students for many years to come.
